Description

The son of a goldsmith, Bacchiacca developed an individual manner of painting characterized by attention to ornament, particularly jewelry, and jarring color combinations. Here he drew inspiration from Michelangelo's fanciful drawing of ideal female antique heads. Bacchiacca's decorative treatment of the figures, however, leaves unclear whether the woman holding a purse full of coins and the lively boy are a portrait group, or personifications of virtue or vice. This painting was recently treated by the Getty Museum's Painting Conservation Department.
