 | Description | |
Half-length paintings of Christ carrying the cross were popular in northern Italian art of the late 1400s. A follower of Leonardo da Vinci, Ambrogio subtly manipulated light and shadow to heighten the impact of Christ's patient submission to his fate. The small scale of this poignant image indicates that it was intended for private devotion.
