 | Description | |
This painting is one of the Getty Museum's earliest independent portraits. The young man's direct gaze and proud bearing are characteristic of Renaissance individualism. His pose and his placement (between two columns in front of vast landscape) are adaptations of a new type of portrait composition made famous by Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa of 1503 (now in the Louvre Museum). The bright colors, even light, and sharp detail in this work reflect the early portraits painted by Raphael in Florence before 1509.
