Cradling the Christ child in her arms, this serene, classically depicted Virgin was fashioned as a full-length figure and polychromed, or painted with bright colors. Due to its size, the sculpture was fired in two sections; only the upper half survives. The artist intended the sculpture to be elevated and seen from below, as it is here, to encourage an empathetic response from the viewer. This suggests that the work was originally placed above an altar to serve as the devotional centerpiece of a church or a private chapel.
