Description

A refined young man stands before a fortification holding a weapon called a halberd. He is not dressed for battle, however, and his elegant, self-assured pose is typical of the formal, aristocratic portraits of the period. The sitter may be Francesco Guardi (born 1514), heir to a patrician family in Florence. Pontormo's masterpiece of portraiture is carefully orchestrated to promote the young man's (or his family's) sense of pride and self-importance.
