 | Description | |
Delacroix was the protagonist of French Romantic painting. Influenced by Rubens and Venetian masters, he developed a painting style of luminous colors and dynamic movement. In this work, however, he seems to display another aspect of his art, depicting an intimate and quiet scene like a musical nocturn. The subject is the Virgin being taught to read the Old Testament by her mother St. Anne. He had painted a larger canvas of the same subject ten years before, using Georges Sand's farm wife and her daughter as models.
