Description

A procession moves from right to left across the picture plain. Maidens lead the way with pipers and sacrificial animals. The priest in his brilliant red costume provides a central focus, while elephants bearing incense burners and fruit bring up the rear. The design derives in part from Andrea Mantegna's 'Triumph of Julius Caesar' (London, Hampton Court, Royal Collection), which Rubens would have known in Mantua as a young man.
