Seated on his throne on the right, the Roman emperor Romulus oversees his soldiers as they carry off the Sabine women. In his "Lives", the ancient Greek biographer Plutarch tells how Romulus invited the neighboring Sabines to attend in Rome so that he could capture their women. You can see the gladiators competing in the background.
