Ludovicus Nonnius was a famous Antwerp doctor, and one of the first to recognize the importance of a healthy diet. His best-known book, the "Diaeteticon sive de recibaria, Libri IV", was published in 1627. Rubens emphasizes the sitter's learning, showing him with his book and a bust of the Greek founder of medicine, Hippocrates.
