These are Rubens's first sketches for ceiling decorations in the banqueting hall at Whitehall Palace, London. In the central oval King James I, seated on an eagle, is crowned by the figures of Justice and Piety. In the smaller ovals, Liberality defeats Avarice, Discipline overcomes Impudence, Knowledge triumphs over Ignorance and heroic Force vanquishes Envy.
