 | Description | |
Herod was so entranced by Salome's dancing that he offered her any wish. Salome asked for the head of Saint John on a plate. The brutality of Rubens's depiction is exceptional : the saint's decapitated body is still in chains, and the executioner rests his foot on the body as he puts away his axe. In his treatment of this subject, Rubens may have been inspired by the work of Caravaggio.
