 | Description | |
A wagon negotiates its way down a steep bank, the rider's red jacket catching our eye. In this unfinished sketch, Rubens's black chalk drawing, and the reddish-brown ground that gives the painting its warmth of tone, are clearly visible. Rubens has begun to block in the greens and browns, and patches of sky between the trees.
This view also appears with slight variations in another landscape by the artist (Rotterdam, Museum Boymans-van Beuningen). It has also been related to a drawing in St Petersburg (Hermitage).
