 | Description | |
The inscriptions on the virginal lid are from the Psalms: "In thee O Lord I put my trust; let me never be put to confusion" and "let everything that hath breath praise the Lord". They may be intended as an ironic commentary on the encounter in the foreground. An early painting by Metsu, "The Twelfth Night Feast", is on the back wall (now Alte Pinakothek, Munich).
