Description

The objects on the table - playing cards, an inn-keeper's slate and a pipe - suggest that the setting is a tavern. The sleeping woman, perhaps the inn-keeper's wife or maid, has been drinking and smoking. Female drunkenness was usually a subject of amusement as well as of moral reproval in 17th-century genre paintings.
