The houses seen through the doorway across the canal are probably not accurate renderings but they are similar to buildings on the main canals in Amsterdam. In contrast to the middle-class interiors of his earlier paintings, during his later years in Amsterdam De Hooch focused on more sophisticated domestic settings and elegant figures.
