Delft (Neitherlands)

Description

This is an idealized image of virtuous love. The woman looks somewhat apprehensively at the viewer, and the image of Cupid holding up a card on the wall signifies 'one ought to love only one'. Due to their similar size and subject-matter, it has recently been argued that this picture is a companion piece to "Young Woman seated at a Virginal" (which hangs nearby).
Signed on the virginal: IVMeer [or IMeer; the capitals are in monogram].
