 | Description | |
A young woman, having interrupted her play, looks openly out of the picture as if to invite the viewer to join her in a duet. Dirck van Barburen's painting of "The Procuress" on the back wall (now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) suggests that this woman's idea of love and partnership may not be entirely idealistic. Due to their similar size and subject-matter, it has recently been argued that this picture is a companion piece to "Young Woman seated at a Virginal" (which hangs nearby).
Signed centre: IVMeer [or IMeer; the capitals are in monogram].
