Item 8 on 16
Flemish and Northern Painting
Painting (Scène intérieure)

Area related
Neitherlands

Description

The maid's pose with her head resting in one hand is traditional for depictions of the deadly sin of Acedia (idleness). While the scene could be interpreted as a moralizing lesson, the housewife, who is pointing at her maid, in fact seems amused rather than upset by her fallibility.
Signed and dated: n. maes. 1655. [mae in monogram]
