Description

Maes had been a pupil of Rembrandt in Amsterdam in the years around 1650 but had returned to his native Dordrecht in 1653. During the 1650s he painted a number of small-scale interiors, such as this one, showing simple domestic scenes. Characteristic of these works is the restricted palette of browns and reds, and the strong light contrasts.
