 | Description | |
Leonardo Loredan was the Doge of Venice from 1501/1521. He wears the ceremonial hat and robe of office of a doge (the head of the Republic of Venice). He is identified by comparison with portrait medals as Doge Loredan. This painting was probably commissioned to celebrate his appointment in 1501. Bellini was then the leading painter in Venice.
Signed on a cartellino: IOANNES BELLINVS.
