This panel is from the upper tier of an altarpiece once in the church of San Nicolo in Padua. Schiavone, a painter from Dalmatia, trained in a Paduan workshop and learned much from Donatello's sculpture. He based this composition upon the marble relief shown to the left or one very like it.
