Description

The Greek Cardinal Bessarion kneels before his reliquary containing fragments of the True Cross. Behind are two members of the Scuola della Carità, the Venetian brotherhood who received this gift from Bessarion in 1472. This painting was the door of the tabernacle or cupboard designed to store the reliquary. Keyholes (now filled in) can be seen on the right.
