 | Description | |
This altarpiece represents the Virgin and Child enthroned with saints Jerome and Sebastian, but it is named after the 'Rondine' (swallow) perched above, the symbol of the Resurrection. It was commissioned for the church of San Francesco in Matelica.
In the predella (the painter tier below an altarpiece) are represented Saint Jerome in the Wilderness, the Nativity and the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. These scenes are flanked by Saint Catherine, with the wheel on which she was martyred, and Saint George in Combat with the dragon.
