 | Description | |
The doctrine that the Virgin Mary was conceived miraculously without sin gained popular support and official approval in the 1490s. This is an early example of an altarpiece dedicated to the Immaculate Virgin. Her purity is symbolised by a lily in a crystal vase. The Franciscan order supported the doctrine, and this altarpiece was made for their church at Pergola in the Italian Marches.
