Gabriele, a devout Franciscan friar, prays in a wood near the Convent of San Francesco ad Alto in Ancona. He died in 1456. In 1489 his relics were transferred to a tomb in the convent church. This painting was placed above it. The swags of fruit are painted as if hung in front of the painting upon which they cast shadows.
