Description

These three panels are fragments of an altarpiece painted for a side-chapel of the Charterhouse at Pavia, a Carthusian monastery near Milan. The central Virgin and Child are flanked by the Archangel Saint Michael on the left, standing on Satan. Raphael and the young Tobias are on the right. Only a small part of Satan is visible beneath the feet of the Archangel Michael who, as captain of the heavenly hosts, overthrew him. In the other side panel, the dog that accompanied Tobias and the Archangel Raphael on their journey has been cut.

Signed on the panel of Saint Michael: PETRVS PERVSINV(S) / PINXIT
