 | Description | |
Saint Sebastian is depicted shot through with arrows, the attempted execution that he miraculously survived. By leaving the picture unvarnished, Matteo di Giovanni has given it a matte surface. The linear delicacy of the saint's face looks to earlier Sienese painting, while his solid body and the landscape refer to works by Piero della Francesca.
