Description

The view is taken from the beach at Sainte-Adresse close to Le Havre, Monet's home town. A rowing boat near the shore directs the viewer towards more ships on the horizon. The skilful rendering of the luminous late afternoon sky and the delicate coloring of the shingle beach suggest that this scene was painted in front of the motif.
