 | Description | |
A young girl and her chaperone are seated in a theatre box, above the rest of the audience. They, not the stage, are the subject of the artist's and the audience's attention. Their separation from the audience is emphasized by the bright gold of the box, which makes a deliberate contrast with their blue dresses.
This painting has been known by various titles. The art dealer Ambroise Vollard called the picture "Au Théâtre" in his 1918 catalogue of Renoir's work, but it subsequently became known as "La Première Sortie" (The First Outing).
