Renoir painted this picture and its pendant (right) to flank the fireplace in the dining room of a flat belonging to Monsieur Maurice Gangnat at 24 avenue de Friedland, Paris. The model, Georgette Pigeot, wears an exotic, pseudo-oriental costume that the artist kept as a prop in his studio.
