Renoir painted this picture and its pendant (right) to flank the fireplace in the dining room of a flat belonging to Monsieur Maurice Gangnat at 24 avenue de Friedland, Paris. The model is Georgette Pigeot. However, the head is that of Gabrielle Renard, a nursemaid in the Renoir household and a favorite model of the artist.
