Description

Rowing boats, boats under sail, and steam trains crossing bridges were favorite motifs of the Impressionists when they painted sun-lit summer scenes along the Seine in the suburbs to the west of Paris. Renoir combines all three in a painting he probably made at Chatou, an area he frequented in the late 1870s.
