 | Description | |
A tiger crouches in the foreground, surprised by man's arrival. Rousseau's jungle is imaginary, derived from specimens of tropical plants in Paris's Botanic Gardens. By placing the trees along a diagonal axis, he has conveyed the sense of wind, in spite of the painting's static and naive style.
The figure of the tiger may have been based on a print after a pastel by Delacroix.
