Lake Keitele is north of Helsinki. Gallen-Kallela paints the site naturalistically but also imbues the image with a symbolic dimension, the silvery streaks that criss-cross the water evoking the presence of the mythical hero Väinämöinen as he passes by in his boat. The artist has signed it with the Swedish form of his name, as opposed to the Finnish by which he is known today.
