Description

Girls dance in a meadow, apparently unaware of the shrouded figure of death, the reaper, in the foreground. The subject was popular in 19th-century French art and literature, and the title recalls Schubert's song "Death and the Maiden". The work is a preliminary study for a large-scale painting.
