The sitter, Ellen Julia Teed (1822-1884), was an author and philanthropist. Her salon in Paris attracted the leading Liberals of the day. In 1840 she married Robert Hollond MP for Hastings. Scheffer has depicted her in timeless classical dress. He probably also designed the frame, decorated with honeysuckle and acanthus.
