 | Description | |
The sitter was the Chief of Police in Napoleonic Rome (1810-1814). A bust, perhaps representing Napoleon's son, was originally included at the top left. This detail was painted over, presumably after the fall of Napoleon. As the oil paint has become more translucent over time, it has re-emerged as a ghostly presence.
