 | Description | |
This painting marks a transition from Millet's early pastoral subjects, rooted in the 18th century, to his monumental peasant subjects. The naked child might equally be a Cupid figure as a peasant boy. The woman, while obviously a countrywoman, is not yet shown engaged in rural labor. Her gracefully turned head and pose are borrowed from Michelangelo.
