Description

Two women recline on a shady riverbank on a summer afternoon. The one in front uses her dress as a pillow. Courbet provoked a scandal when he exhibited a larger version of this painting in 1857. Critics were disturbed that the women were only partially clothed and almost certainly prostitutes.
