Description

The copper cistern from which the maid is drawing water may be the one recorded in the artist's household. The painting is influenced by Dutch 17th-century pictures depicting scenes from daily life. Chardin differentiates the textures of copper, wood, stone, drapery and raw meat.

There are several versions of the design, including a painting dated 1733 (Nationalmuseum, Stockholm), which was exhibited at the Salon, possibly in 1734. Chardin often exhibited at the Salon paintings done many years previously. One version of "The Water Urn" was probably exhibited at the Salon of 1773.
