Description

Pierre-Victor de Besenval (1721-1791) was the military commander of Paris. After the fall of the Bastille in 1789, he was briefly imprisoned and then retired. Besenval was also an art collector. The ormolu mounts for the porcelain on the mantelpiece were fashionable a generation earlier. In this portrait, painted in the last year of the sitter's life, they seem to function as souvenirs of less turbulent times.
