Description   

Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson (1721-1764) was made the marquise de Pompadour soon after becoming mistress to Louis XV in 1745. She is shown working at a tambour frame. One of her pet dogs is beside her. The marquise's head was painted in April 1763 and the painting finished in May 1764, a month after her death.

Signed and dated on the work-table to the right: Peint par Drouais le fils/la tête en avril 1763: et le/tableau fini en mai 1764 [Painted by Drouais/ the head in April 1763 and the/painting finished in May 1764].
