Psyche's lover, Cupid, gave her splendid gifts which she showed to her sisters. Their envy is personified by the figure in the sky above them. The subject is from Apuleius's 'The Golden Ass', but was probably known to Fragonard from a well-known derivative work by the 17th-century author, Jean de la Fontaine.
