Description

The young girl is having her fortune told. Her costume and that of the young man may have been intended to look Turkish, and the necromancer's costume Chinese. Various objects on the right indicate the fortune-teller's learning. A perfume-burner is smoking in the background on the left.

Three versions of this subject are known, including one in the Hermitage, St Petersburg. It is not known which of the three was the one exhibited at the Salon of 1775.
