Christ prays in the Garden of Gethsemane, near Jerusalem (seen in the left background). Above, an angel holds a chalice and a cross, in reference to his coming sacrifice. The three disciples who joined Christ in this vigil lie asleep, unaware of Judas's approach with the Roman soldiers who will arrest Christ (Matthew 26: 36-47).
