The writing on the letter identifies the sitter as Bartolomeo Bianchini of Bologna, the city where Francia worked as a painter and goldsmith. Bianchini was a scholar from a noble family who commissioned other works from the artist.

Inscribed : Bar[tolomeo?] Blanchino/bono[niae?] (Bartolomeo Bianchini of Bologna).
