Description

The painting is based on a woodcut illustration to a popular romance called the "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili" (Dream of Polyphilus), published in Venice in 1499. It was probably not intended as an illustration to that work, but as a representation of pagan sacrificial rites in general. The painting is dated in Roman numerals on step of the altar.
