The regatta was part of Venice's annual carnival celebrations. Here is the race is for single-oared gondolas. Spectators watch the proceedings from windows, balconies and moored boats. At the extreme left is an ornate pavilion from which the prizes for the races were given; it is decorated with the arms of Doge Alvise Pisani, who ruled from 1735 to 1741.
