This view shows the main square of Venice from the west. At the far end is the façade of Saint Mark's basilica and its bell-tower. On the left and right are the administrative buildings of the Procuratie Vecchie and Procuratie Nuove.
The painting is one of the earliest of Guardi's works as a view painter, probably dating from about 1760.
