 | Description | |
This is a preparatory oil sketch for the monumental altarpiece Polidoro painted for the Catalan church in Messina, Sicily. Christ, who is on his way to Calvary to be crucified, has fallen to his knees. While one soldier torments him, another tugs at the coarse rope around his neck. Behind, the Virgin has fainted. This is one of the earliest known oil sketches.
The altarpiece was completed before 1534.
